Trip to the Dairy Farm

Monday, April 21st, 2008

When we arrived, we all gathered in our sixes ready to follow Hathe. He led us off to see some of the cows - these were Frisians (they are black and white).

Then we went to the sheds where the food is stored, these were huge and the bales of food were stacked very high! The cows eat grass when they are in fields but during the winter they are given extra food.

Next we saw where some of the calves are kept; this is like a sectioned barn. They are fed on milk when thet are very young and go onto dry food as they get older.

After this we visited the milking parlour - this was very interesting. They used this one a long time ago and it was very basic. There are 400 cows on the farm and it would take 7 hours to milk all of them because only 1 person could do it at a time it must have been very tiring milking all them cows by yourself.

Once we had seen the old milking parlour we visited the new milking parlour this one only takes 3 hours to milk all the cows and it also shows if the milk is suitable to turn into cheese or to drink. If it is not suitable to drink it gets transferred into another container then the cow is treated for any infection. This is all controlled by the new computerised milking machine. It was very interesting looking at all the mechanical devices, these do all the jobs meaning the people only now need to clean the cow udders and attach the milking machine. The huge carousel turns slowly allowing the cows to enter, be milked and then they leave it without it stopping. This speeds up the milking process a lot. The milk is collected in a huge container ready to be collected by the Lorries.

We all had a really great time and really enjoyed ourselves.

When we arrived we were called to the hut to be sorted into our groups for the activities.  When the siren blew we mad our way to the first base.

First we tried to get beans from a can into the pot without touching the ground mat, the pot, and the can of beans or the stove where the beans were placed.  Then it was beanbag throwing, hoola hoping and ski racing.  After that we went orienteering around the field.  Also we made sculptures out of bamboo, which was called pioneering.

After lunch we did arts, crafts and cooking. Then we played Egert, we needed to keep the egg from smashing so we wrapped it up with newspaper, tissue, boxes, paper etc.  So when we threw it, it was hopefully safe. Finally we did signalling with flags and an assault course in the woods.  When we got back to the hut the leaders we rewarded and the cubs that lost their property had to do press-ups.  At the end we saluted the flag and went home.

Everybody had a great day.

Roseland Observatory Camp

On Saturday the 9th February, we did an astronomy camp in Sticker. It started at 9am & when my dad (Kaa) and I arrived, we found out that we were the first one’s here, but sooner or later more people came. 13 people attended the sleepover. When everyone was here, we did Grand Howl, unpacked our camping bags & took out our sleeping bags (which we lay down in our six.) We then did our camp books, which we write in on camps, very quickly for we had to pack our day bags, and go to the Roseland observatory in Akela’s, Kaa’s, Hathi’s & Raksha’s cars. When we got there, a man called Mr. sheen (Brian sheen) told us what we were going to do for the day. We made sundials, had a look at the Sun and made planets for a solar system. We also watched a few information films. They were EXELLENT. We then had lunch just outside the observatory were we also had a cup of tea, which were wade on camp stoves. Then we did a talk on 2 subjects about space (my six did about the Sun and the planets.) Then we did a walk to Coombe woods where we had a snack & back. We came back to watch Brian fire some rockets. For tea we had nice, warm pasties before we watched a film about ‘black holes’. After that, we were all tired so we all went back to the hut to sleep. I didn’t get to sleep very well because there was too much talking but eventually I drifted off. The next day, we packed up all our stuff, had breakfast, wrote in our books, did Grand Howl, said goodbye and we all went home.
