Trip to the Dairy Farm
Monday, April 21st, 2008When we arrived, we all gathered in our sixes ready to follow Hathe. He led us off to see some of the cows - these were Frisians (they are black and white).
Then we went to the sheds where the food is stored, these were huge and the bales of food were stacked very high! The cows eat grass when they are in fields but during the winter they are given extra food.
Next we saw where some of the calves are kept; this is like a sectioned barn. They are fed on milk when thet are very young and go onto dry food as they get older.
After this we visited the milking parlour - this was very interesting. They used this one a long time ago and it was very basic. There are 400 cows on the farm and it would take 7 hours to milk all of them because only 1 person could do it at a time it must have been very tiring milking all them cows by yourself.
Once we had seen the old milking parlour we visited the new milking parlour this one only takes 3 hours to milk all the cows and it also shows if the milk is suitable to turn into cheese or to drink. If it is not suitable to drink it gets transferred into another container then the cow is treated for any infection. This is all controlled by the new computerised milking machine. It was very interesting looking at all the mechanical devices, these do all the jobs meaning the people only now need to clean the cow udders and attach the milking machine. The huge carousel turns slowly allowing the cows to enter, be milked and then they leave it without it stopping. This speeds up the milking process a lot. The milk is collected in a huge container ready to be collected by the Lorries.
We all had a really great time and really enjoyed ourselves.
